Jean Melvin Obituary

Jean wrote her own obituary before going to her Heavenly home on Wednesday, July 29, 2020. This is what she wanted everyone to know.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming, “wow, what a ride!”. And what a ride it has been!

I was born on December 3, 1931. My parents, Berlin and Dorothy Jackson passed away when I was very young and I was placed in Shawen Acres Children’s Home in Dayton along with my sister, Betty. I lived in a foster home with Ralph and Margaret Warner in Pleasant Hill for five years.

I graduated from Newton High School in 1950. I was of the Brethren faith. I married the love of my life, Harold, in September 1950. I was fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom and raise our two daughters.

I eventually obtained my real estate license and sold real estate for several years. I served as Deputy Registrar in Troy for 16 years. I also enjoyed the opportunity to help people obtain jobs while running the Troy Employment Service and I had the privilege of serving as a Troy City Council member. I also volunteered as a tax preparer for AARP for twenty years.

I am survived by my husband Harold, who has been my rock for 70 years; my daughters Vicki Moore (Tom) and Marla Elliott (Tom); my grandchildren Kristie Marshall (John), Ashley Lutz (Bill), Erin Coate (Chad), and Scott Jones (Aluscia); great-grandchildren Ryan Marshall, Kaylie Marshall, Jackson Lutz, Whitney Gregg-Jones, Cora Coate, Charlotte Lutz, and Harper Jones; step-grandchildren Bill Elliott, Jayne Osborne (David Clapper), Angela Moore (Keith Cooper), Rhonda Miller, and Jonathan Moore; step-great-grandchildren Madysen Osborne, Delany Osborne, and Mason Moore; as well as brother Dennis Warner (Mary Jane).

I was preceded in death by great-grandson Bryant Jones; sisters Betty, Jesse, and Aletha; and brothers George, Ray, Darrell, and Doug.

Please do not grieve my passing, only celebrate my destination.

A graveside service will be held 1:00PM Friday, July 31, 2020 at Miami Memorial Park, Covington. Memorial contributions may be made to Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County.
