Obituary

Fred Richard Young of Troy, Ohio, peacefully left this earth and returned home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 17, 2023. He was born on April 9, 1935 in Nevada County, Arkansas to the late Carl Young Sr., and Gustavia Tidwell-Young.

He was one of 12 children. When he was of age, Fred enlisted into the U.S. Army where he served faithfully. After the military, Fred worked and retired from B.F. Goodrich after over 25 years of service. Fred was a dedicated member of Zion Baptist Church, in Troy. He always beamed with pride when he would mention to you that he was an ordained Deacon there. On top of all that, he was an exceptionally gifted athlete…..well known for hitting home runs on the softball field. Every time he approached the plate…the other players would shake in their cleats. He was also a menace on the basketball court, known for his precision in shooting. “The Big Man” was the ULTIMATE cook and entrepreneur. He made dinners for the B.F. Goodrich family, his juke joint members, members of the community and his own family. He was the co-owner of Gulf Gas Station and Troy Ohio’s First African American Night Club named, “The Hustler’s Lounge”.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Gustavia Young, his wife Mattie Young, nine brothers and sisters, Carl Young Jr., Elzie Young, Harding Bernette Young, Ira Thomas Young, Willie Davis Young, William Jeremiah, Alberta Young-Hill, Alzerine Marie Jacob-Young, Annie Merle Young, five grandchildren, Cynthia King, Michael “Mikie” Williams, Cedric Connors, Brittany Baskin and Isaiah Baskin.

Deacon Fred leaves behind his two loving sisters, Ruby Earlene Young-Curry, Alice Faye Young-Cotton, his children JoAnn King, Dorothy King, James Morrison, Terry Clemons, Brian Clemons, Ricky Godsey, Angela Godsey, Miles Brown, LaDonna (Michael) Williams, Christopher (Tina) King, a host of beautiful grand and great grandchildren, special nieces, Michelle Sockwell and Nettavia Curry.

Paw Paw Fred will always be loved and deeply missed. “In a Minute”...
