William Wall Obituary

William K. Wall, 97, of Charlottesville, Virginia, left this life peacefully on Friday, June 29, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Bill was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 57 years, Virginia Douglas Wall.

Bill was born on June 7, 1921 to Hester (Kuntz) and Lester Wall of Richwood, OH.

Bill enjoyed idyllic childhood summers in Dayton, OH in the loving care of his maternal grandparents Dooney (Nicholas J. Kuntz) and Grandma Kuntz (Anna Browne). His lifelong passion for horses was fostered in this environment, where his beloved Dooney taught him to ride. Another love was ballroom dancing, introduced to him at a young age by his doting aunts.

A graduate of The Ohio State University, Bill served his country as 1st Lt. in WWII. After years of managing the family owned Richwood Lumber Co., Bill’s passion for horses won out and he established Wall Brothers Stable with his brother, Nick Wall. He raced harness horses for over three decades, competing at major raceways in the US including Sportsman’s Park, Hollywood Park and The Meadowlands.  In his early 60’s Bill joined the Chicago Board of Trade where he traded commodities for 20 years.

Bill and Virginia retired to Charlottesville in 2000. Bill was warmly welcomed into the horse community of Millington Stables where he enjoyed trail riding in the beautiful countryside well into his 90’s. Bill remained an avid dancer throughout his life frequenting ballrooms in Charlottesville as well as Glen Echo Ballroom near DC. His smooth style allowed any partner to feel accomplished on the dance floor.

Bill will be greatly missed by his children, Melissa Slutzky (David), Mary K. Wall (Ray Goldstein) and Katherine Boehm (George), grandchildren, Briana Branham (Jacob), Rebecca Slutzky, Isaac Slutzky (Heather), Douglas Goldstein (Lynn), Leila Goldstein, Robert Boehm, and Laurie Faig (Dan), and his great-grandchildren, Phineas and Penelope Branham, and Tyler and Erik Faig, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Bill is survived by his siblings, Anabel Sult, Nicholas J. Wall (Dottie), and Dr. Lester E. Wall and was predeceased by his sister Rosemary Taylor. Bill touched the lives of many, including his dear friend Elsie Barnd of Charlottesville. Bill relished spending time with his family and friends, happy to share lively conversation over a room temperature Stella Artois. We will fondly remember Bill as we raise a glass to his favorite toast, “First Tonight”.

A service will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, OH on July 28, 2018 at 10am, followed by a celebration of Bill’s life at the Marriott Hotel (Univ. of Dayton) at 11:30.

Arrangements entrusted to Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home, Troy, OH. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.fishercheneyfuneralhome.com .
